1. Verify the license yourself
Ask for the license number and search it on the Florida DBPR license search. Check that the license is active, that it covers pool work, and whether it is certified (statewide) or registered (limited to specific jurisdictions). Section 489.105 of the Florida Statutes defines these terms. Some company websites show a license number in the footer, which is a good start but not proof.
2. Confirm what they actually build
Many Fort Myers companies are listed on Google Maps as pool contractors but focus on cleaning, repair, resurfacing or renovation. Ask directly: do you build new in-ground pools, and how many per year? You do not need a number to be impressive. You need a clear answer.
3. Get at least three itemized written quotes
Compare the same scope: pool type, dimensions, depth, finish, deck, equipment, lighting, screen enclosure, electrical work, fencing or other safety feature, permit fees and cleanup. A low total with missing lines is not a low price.
4. Ask who handles the permit and inspections
The permit guide explains the process. Your contract should say who applies, who pays the fee and who schedules inspections.
5. Read the reviews with care
Star averages hide a lot. Open the listing, sort by newest, read the lowest ratings, and see whether the owner replied. The Google Maps numbers on this site are a snapshot from November 5, 2026.
6. Read the contract before you pay
- Payment schedule tied to finished work, not only dates.
- Start and finish dates and what happens if they slip.
- Warranty terms in writing, including who honors them.
- What counts as a change order and how it is priced.
If anything feels rushed, slow down. Our list of Fort Myers pool builders is a place to start, not a recommendation of any one company.
